Welcome to cwg.live, updated around-the-clock by Capital Weather Gang meteorologists.

Happening now: Mostly cloudy with perhaps a quick flurry through evening, then clearing again late night with another cold weather advisory. Lows about 3 to 11, and wind chills below zero late night through Wednesday morning.

What’s next? Very cold weather continues through the week, with Friday maybe the coldest day of all. There’s a chance of more snow this weekend.

🔷 CWG’s detailed D.C.-area forecast

Forecast in detail

Tonight: Another frigid night, with an evening flurry chance amid mostly cloudy skies. Clearing later with lows in the single digits to around 10. Winds from the northwest at 5 to 10 mph mean wind chills below zero. Confidence: High

Tomorrow (Wednesday): Strong cold continues with a sunny morning and partly cloudy afternoon. An afternoon flurry or snow shower is possible. Highs are in the 20s with wind chills in the single digits and teens. Winds are from the northwest at 5 t0 1o mph again. Confidence: Medium-High

Tomorrow night: Partly cloudy and cold with a chance of a snow shower or flurry. Lows by dawn are mostly in the frigid single digits to low teens. Confidence: Medium-High

A look ahead

Thursday continues this incredible streak of deep cold, with sunny skies and highs in the upper teens to mid-20s. Thursday night should see clear skies with super-cold low temperatures in the single digits. Some locations could reach zero or lower. Confidence: Medium-High

Friday features the coldest daytime temperatures of this week and the winter so far. Mostly sunny skies do little to take the edge off high temperatures in the teens to near 20. Partly cloudy Friday night and still very cold with single digit to low teens for lows. Confidence: Medium-High

The weekend is a tricky one as weather models flirt with the idea of a coastal storm system. This feature could stay far enough offshore to keep us dry, but there’s also a slight chance of substantial snowfall.

Regardless, expect cold highs in the 20s and lows in the teens, along with gusty winds that make it feel even colder. Confidence: Low

Next week brings a continuation of colder than normal conditions, but it does not look as severe as this week with 30s for highs and teens and 20s for lows.

Today’s daily digit — 1/10: The digit may be higher than the temperature in colder areas this morning. This is hardcore cold! | 🤚 Your call?

The digit is a somewhat subjective rating of the day’s weather, on a 0-to-10 scale.

Snow potential index — 4/10 (↑): Some models are showing a storm threat for the Mid-Atlantic this weekend, starting either Saturday or Sunday. This one could be a classic nor’easter flavor, including high winds, but it’s a less than 50-50 chance.

The snow potential index is a daily assessment of the potential for at least 1 inch of snow in the next week, on a 0-to-10 scale.
